According to industry reports, medical tourism in Tijuana Mexico has been steadily increasing over the last decade because of its low pharmaceutical prices and treatments with a 40-65% cost less than in the United States.

Many U.S. citizens choose to visit the bordertown for a range of treatments, from heart surgery to hip replacements as well as for cosmetic treatments or wellness vacations.

A report by the Universidad Iberoamericana looking into medical tourism companies estimated that around 400,000 tourists went for medical vacations and accessed medical treatments in the cities of Tijuana, Monterrey and Mexico City in 2015, most of them being U.S. citizens.

Investment promotion agency ProMéxico estimates that in 2015, medical tourism agencies generated $3.3 billion of business. Medical tourism consumer information service Patients Without Borders estimated that in 2016, 1.4 million Americans travelled abroad for medical tourism purposes and spent between $3,800-$6,000 per visit.

In the upcoming years, Mexico is considered to have one of the highest growth opportunities for medical tourism. Besides Tijuana, other towns in Baja California, such as Algodones have already opened 350 clinics aimed for medical tourism making an estimated $6 million per year from cross-border patients.

According to research firm Allied Market Research, the global medical tourism industry will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 15.7% to reach $143.8 billion by 2022.
